When we made silk dresses years ago, the problem of perspiration stains was a huge concern. I would tell the dance moms to find a t shirt top to wear underneath. It needed to be snug fitting, so that it would not add bulk, and have sleeves to protect the underarm area of the dress. A top like this proved difficult to find. When a suitable top could be found in cotton, there was a problem in that it absorbed the sweat and remained damp.

Finally, in conjunction with an aerobics instructor, we designed a trim Lycra® top specifically to wear under Irish Dancing costumes. The crop top has proved very successful in helping prevent perspiration stains on the dresses, especially when used with dress shields. We now cut them with extra length version to add to the protection and increase the modesty.

Special high tech aerobic wear fabric looks and feels as comfortable as cotton, but is actually nylon. The fabric actually "wicks" the moisture away from your body and dries quickly when exposed to air. The top cannot wick the moisture to the surface to dry until you take your dress off. This way your dress is protected while you are kept more comfortable. Also, you will not have to put the dress back on for the next dance over a damp garment.

Since the fabric dries so much faster than cotton, you can cool off without getting a chill from sitting around in damp clothing. It is also great for practice wear.
